Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Severe mental health concerns don’t have to get in the way of the big plans your child has for their life. Sierra Vista Hospital offers focused outpatient services meeting the unique needs of adolescents.

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) delivers structured support to 12½- to 17-year-olds, three hours a day, three to five days a week. This service is for young adults who need a higher level of care but are stable enough to go to school and live at home.

Adolescent IOP at Sierra Vista Hospital: Why Choose Us?

Compassionate, highly regarded staff guide your child’s care. The group is led by psychiatrists who work closely with nursing staff and therapists. We are in tune with your child’s needs and communicate regularly, adjusting therapies to meet your child’s goals.

Highlights of our program include:

  • Age-appropriate services: Our adolescent IOP addresses mental health issues that commonly affect young adults. Staff are patient, friendly and talk to adolescents in ways that make it easier to understand complex concepts. We also focus on the skills young adults need to navigate life challenges.
  • Comfortable healing environment: Adolescent IOP services are available in our Folsom Sierra Wellness Clinic. We offer spacious, light-filled treatment areas that promote healing. The campus also has inviting outdoor spaces, perfect for taking in some fresh air during breaks.
  • Timely services: If your child may benefit from our IOP program, we respond quickly. The first step is an in-depth assessment that’s available on short notice and at no cost to you. Eligible adolescents are admitted and can begin treatment the same day. Contact us to get started.
  • Flexibility: We run group therapy sessions 3-5 days a week, enabling your child to choose the days that work for them. After-school sessions are also available via telehealth, making it easier to keep up with their regular routine. Sierra Vista is one of the few programs in the region with this virtual offering.

Our Approach to Adolescent IOP

Adolescence can be a challenging time. We offer the helping hand some young adults need to become their best selves. We deliver services that bring healing to individuals with severe anxiety, depression, addictive behaviors and defiant tendencies.

IOP starts by helping your child explore triggers for unhealthy behaviors and how their reactions impact themselves and others. We facilitate group therapy sessions that teach your child how to process these situations and respond in thoughtful ways. IOP teaches participants how to communicate effectively and maintain healthy relationships.

Adolescent IOP: What to Expect

Our adolescent IOP services include:

  • Personalized treatments: We take time to get to know your child, their challenges and what they want to get out of treatment. We use this information to tailor their care experience.
  • Psychiatric assessments and medication management: Sometimes, medications are necessary to ease symptoms. We aim to prescribe the appropriate drug and dose to help your child get relief.
  • Group therapy: Mental health providers guide discussions that help your child evaluate their thoughts and behaviors, with an eye toward improvement. Group therapy also teaches your child healthy communication and coping skills.
  • Individual interventions and family meetings as needed: If your child has a setback, we give them the one-on-one attention they need to move past it. As appropriate, we discuss treatment progress and the next steps of care with you or other designated guardians.
  • Discharge planning: As the end of treatment nears, we help your child transition back to community-based care. Efforts may include finding mental health providers that are right for their needs.
